SUE FINLEY

I have been playing flute for 44 years and I was delighted when I found the Madison Flute Club. It has provided me with an avenue to share my love of flute and music with other flutists, a place to perform, and many wonderful friends. I both take and teach flute lessons. When I’m not playing flute, I love to be with my grandchildren, spend time with family and friends on the lake, and work in my garden.

I studied flute with a private teacher all through junior/senior high school and had the opportunity to play in WYSO, Honors Band, Young Americans in Concert as well as soloing with the HS band. I was accepted into the School of Music at UW-Madison where I studied for one year with Dr. Robert Cole, and James Westfall. I then changed my major to horticulture, but continued my flute studies with various area teachers.

I have played improvisational flute at our church worship services for 35 years, and play for weddings, funerals, and other events. I study with Betty Bielefeld, retired flautist of the Madison Symphony Orchestra. I also regularly attend master classes.

I have been teaching flute lessons since the mid 1980’s. I especially enjoy working with beginning flautists, both young and “old”, and I can give a solid grounding in the fundamentals of flute playing. As a first teacher I can help explore the flute to see if it is the best instrument for you or your student.  Many students choose to study with me throughout high school; occasionally I recommend more advanced instruction if the student is interested in studying music professionally.
